Two bills were recently introduced in the NC House and the NC Senate to allow what’s known as balcony solar or “plug-in solar” in North Carolina. Portable panels, from 1-3, can be mounted on a balcony and plugged into a normal 120-volt outlet. It can help lower energy bills and carbon emissions. We want the sponsors of these bills to know we support their efforts and thank them for their leadership. House Bill 1129 sponsors are listed below.They are all Democrats. Senate Bill 957 sponsors are listed on the next page with five sponsors, three Democrats and two Republicans. A sample thank you note is also on page two. Feel free to use it as is or edit. I’m writing to thank you for co-sponsoring H1129 to allow balcony solar in North Carolina. We need more options for residents who can’t afford rooftop solar. While our state has over 6,800 MW of solar capacity, the NC Utilities Commission recently approved a pause in new large-scale solar development. With the urgency of the climate crisis and extreme weather events affecting all North Carolinians, we need to quickly transition our state’s energy grid to clean energy including wind, rooftop solar, battery storage, and now balcony solar.
