DESCRIPTION:Join the volunteer training to become an ambassador for Sustain Charlotte! \nThis free training session will take place at the Independence Regional Library’s community room for approximately 2 hours. Volunteers will be guided through an initial staff presentation about the mission and history of Sustain Charlotte and have a chance to learn about efforts being taken today to generate a healthier\, more equitable\, and vibrant community. \nAttendees will also be invited to engage in an educational activity\, explore government resources\, and ask questions to build the skills and confidence necessary to represent Sustain Charlotte at community events. \nSustain Charlotte will provide coffee and breakfast treats. \nWhen the training concludes at 11:30\, ambassadors are invited to join Sustain Charlotte staff for an optional guided walking tour of the Monroe Rd area near the library. We’ll learn firsthand about many urban design principles and transportation issues discussed during the training. \nWho should attend? This ambassador training is geared towards individuals who: \n\nHave some familiarity with Sustain Charlotte\, such as previously attending one of our events\, following us on social media\, or receiving our newsletter.\nEnjoy meeting new people and sharing enthusiasm for Sustain Charlotte’s work.\nCan volunteer with us at least 3 times per year. We have many opportunities on weekends and weekday evenings. Spring and fall are busiest!\n\nHow to get here: The Independence Regional Library is at 6000 Conference Dr\, Charlotte 28212. DESCRIPTION:Time and date: Saturday\, August 17th\, 9:00 AM- 12:00 PM\nLocation: Clark Creek Greenway (location specified upon registering)\nActivity: Collecting\, taking photos\, and identifying local bee species as part of nationwide count.\nNote: Hosted by Bee City partners: NCWF and Charlotte Wildlife Stewards\n\nPlease join NCWF Charlotte Wildlife Stewards Chapter\, NCWF staff\, and Central Carolinas Master Naturalist volunteers to participate in a Xerces Society Bumble Bee Atlas survey. The Atlas is a community science initiative aimed at gathering important data needed to track and conserve bumble bees! \nVolunteers with and without experience are needed for this survey. Experienced volunteers who have participated in the Atlas before or received prior training (https://www.bumblebeeatlas.org/pages/train-online) are needed to catch bumble bees using aerial insect nets and get them safely into vials on ice. Volunteers without experience will help transfer bees into vials\, take photos\, carry equipment\, record data\, and learn how to participate in the survey. \nExpect the initial collection of bees to take approximately one hour to complete. Taking photos and collecting data will take up the remainder of the time. Bumble bees you can expect to see during the survey are the common eastern bumble bee\, the two-spotted bumble bee\, the brown-belted bumble bee\, and the American bumble bee.

Drop in anytime to receive your crash course in pollinator ID before reviewing instructions and beginning your count in the pollinator garden onsite. \nCounting is simple. Observe a flowering plant for 15 minutes and tally the number of insects that land on it. No prior experience is needed to participate. We will provide everything you need\, and afterwards\, you can participate in the Census at home. The Great Southeast Pollinator Census occurs all day on August 22nd and August 23rd!  \nThe goals of the Census are threefold: to create sustainable pollinator habitat\, to increase the entomological literacy of our community\, and to generate useful data about our pollinator populations. The race’s mission is to promote the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other to move Charlotte forward. The event’s purpose is to show that running can make you healthier\, happier\, and more confident with no regard to age\, cultural differences\, gender\, pace or experience. \nSince 2022\, Sustain Charlotte has one of the race beneficiaries and they are grateful for this partnership.
